ArtistaSa Sartiglia
The term Sartiglia derives from the Castilian word Sortilla, which in turn comes from the Latin Sorticula, meaning ring, but also from sors, meaning fortune. The game, which takes place on horseback, consists of riders attempting to strike a target — a star — thus challenging fate.Sa Sartiglia, a grand horse race competition, is held during Carnival, specifically on the last Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. The painting is divided into two canvases to soften the solemnity of the event. It is, in fact, a tradition passed down from generation to generation. In my work, time and tradition are represented by an elderly man, while modernity — the renewal of the race each year — is symbolized by the mask, to which I have given a less traditional, more textural and material appearance.
