ArtistaRaccontando Ulisse fra Scilla e Cariddi
100 × 100 – Acrylic and salt on canvas – Year 2024
Mythological tale drawn from the Odyssey.
Ulysses, bound to the mast of his ship, crossed the Strait of Messina between the two sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis.
Following the advice of the sorceress Circe, he steered slightly closer to the Calabrian coast of Scylla; in doing so, he lost six of his men but avoided being swallowed by Charybdis.
The two beautiful nymphs appear in the painting both in their human form and in their monstrous one.
The expression “to be between Scylla and Charybdis” is still used today to describe the situation of being caught between two opposing dangers that are difficult to avoid.
